more detailed informations on our association

The quality association for environmentally-agreeable latex mattresses e.v. is a connection of latex foam whippers, mattress manufacturers and merchants of natural latex mattresses with the goal to care for a secured quality at the employment of natural latex as well as more safety for the consumer of natural latex mattresses.

The association was founded at the end of 1994 and at present it has 21 members.

Due to the initiative of the eco-Institute in Cologne, at first there was a kind of “round table” with all groups occupied with the production and processing of natural latex.

After several meetings, the Quality Association for environmentally-agreeable Latex Mattresses (QUL) was founded.

In the past, natural latex appeared again and again in the news: During tests, there were found e.g. nitrosamines or residues of herbicides.
Another important aspect is the that the term “"natural latex"” is not protected.

It is not defined in any way which content of natural latex a natural latex mattress really has to have. This cannot be recognized from the outside by the consumer – the share of natural latex can be defined only by an expensive chemical analysis.

As the legal authorities have still difficulties with clear regulations, the aforementioned experts have assembled in order to give the consumer safety and clearness by clear rules.

The criteria of the quality association are considered at present as the most consequent and safest ones. A scientific advisory board, consisting of 2 independent testing institutes, have taken over the care and further development of the catalogue of criteria.
The QUL-certificate was developed as a marking for the consumer. Is dictates with clear criteria, how a natural latex mattress must be in order to be entitled to carry this certificate.

The aim is:
- to guarantee the consumer safety against pollutants
- to ensure for the manufacturing of natural latex mattresses during all steps of the processing a maximum of environmental compatibility
- to develop methods for the recycling of used mattresses and for the disposal of non-recyclable remnants
